The main purpose of these measurements is to determine, qualitatively, the presence or absence of significant radioactivity. For alpha and beta counts, a 100 mg solid sample is counted. In the case of liquids, a 500 ml aliquot is evaporated to produce a thin source. Swipes, up to 5 cm in diameter, are also conveniently counted.
