Automatic Mini Reader for Bubble Detectors used in Space Applications

The Space Reader System designed and built for the Matroshka-R experiments is conceptually the same as bubble reading systems sold comercially by BTI for over ten years. The purpose of these reader systems is to accurately and reproducibly count the number of bubbles generated in a BTI bubble detector by irradiation with neutrons. The reader uniquely identifies the bubble detector and its calibration information, counts the bubbles, calculates the neutron dose and dose rate, and stores the detector image and associated information.

  • Bubble Detector is held in a solid cell
  • Incorporates a low-power embedded computer and LCD touch screen
  • Digital camera was specifically chosen for low-power consumption
  • An electroluminescent (EL) panel provides uniform backlighting of the detector
  • Built in high-performance laser bar code reader for detector identification
  • User-interface software has been completely re-written to facillitate cosmonaut interaction
